Kauai is by far one of the most beautiful, untouched places you'll ever see — and there is so much to do. Here are the 5 experiences that are truly unmissable on your first trip.
You'll need a rental car for most of these. I rented mine from Kauai Isle Car Rentals — book in advance, especially in summer.
We did a raft tour and it ended up being our absolute favorite day on the entire island. The views are insane — towering sea cliffs, hidden sea caves, crystal-clear water. Tours run about 4.5–5 hours and include snorkeling gear and snacks.
Fiona's tip: Book in advance — these sell out fast. Be prepared to be strapped on and bouncing (you might get a little sore) but it's truly really fun.
My favorite beach on the entire island. There are steep stairs and a rope section to get down — wear real shoes. You will be rewarded with the most stunning views you've ever seen. Tucked below the Princeville cliffs on the North Shore.
Fiona's tip: Wear proper shoes for the descent. Go early morning for the best light and fewer people. Bring your snorkel gear!!
The prettiest hotel on the island — full stop. Waking up here with views over Hanalei Bay is something I genuinely think about all the time. You don't have to stay to experience it (pop in for breakfast or sunset drinks at Welina Terrace), but if you can swing it — stay here. It's worth every penny.
Fiona's tip: Book Welina Terrace for sunset drinks — one of the best views on the island and you don't need to be a guest to dine there. But if you're going to splurge anywhere on this trip, make it your hotel.
Located on the sunny south shore, this place had SO many cute monk seals and sea turtles just resting on the sand. It has that true, authentic Hawaii feel. Stay behind the ropes and keep your distance from wildlife.
Fiona's tip: Grab poke from Koloa Fish Market before you go — so yummy!
Rent a car and drive to Waimea Canyon — make sure to come on a clear day, otherwise you'll miss the views entirely. Do the scenic drive, stop at every lookout, and add the Kalalau Lookout at Kōkeʻe State Park if the weather is clear.
Fiona's tip: Check the weather forecast the night before. Combine with Kōkeʻe State Park and the Kalalau Lookout for the full experience.
Save this to your Google Maps so you have everything ready when you land.
How I'd structure a first trip around these 5 spots
Book the Nā Pali Coast raft tour for the morning. Most weather-dependent activity — do it first. Rest in the afternoon, you'll need it.
Morning hike to Hideaway Beach (bring snorkel gear). Afternoon drinks and sunset at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay's Welina Terrace.
Grab poke from Koloa Fish Market, then head to Poʻipū Beach for seal and turtle spotting. Explore town, relax on the beach.
Check the weather first, then drive to Waimea Canyon. Canyon lookouts + Kōkeʻe State Park. Head south for dinner.
